Using Vector Displacement Maps in Mudbox

Want to create super-detailed sculpts in just seconds? You need to use VDMs!

Creating and using Vector Displacement Maps

VDMs are a great way to add lots of detail to your sculpts very quickly – I go over the process of extracting and using VDMs in this short video.

What are Vector Displacement Maps?

Vector Displacement Maps are more sophisticated than regular displacement maps – with a VDM, you can include undercuts, meaning your VDM can recreate extremely complex shapes.

Spend a few minutes creating a small, highly detailed sculpt of something that repeats – like reptile scales, for instance. Then Spray or Repeat your VDM across the surface of your base model,  and suddenly you’ve got a detailed model that takes only seconds to create!
